It’s no secret that hybrid vehicle sales have been rising in recent years. With climate change being a major international concern, car buyers are increasingly turning to hybrids for their eco-friendly designs and fuel efficiency. In response to this shift, luxury automakers such as Lexus and Volvo are developing a new generation of hybrids that’ll give you a clean ride while retaining many benefits of traditional combustion engine vehicles. In this article, our team at Turan Foley Cadillac explores Cadillac’s stance on hybrids and the models you can expect to find on our lot.

Cadillac’s Approach to Hybrids

American luxury auto manufacturer Cadillac has been at the forefront of envelope-pushing auto design and manufacturing for well over a century. For this reason, it may surprise you that the brand doesn’t offer hybrids in its current lineup. However, this wasn’t always the case, as Cadillac has produced several highly successful hybrids in the past.

The last hybrid to roll out the company’s production lines was the 2016 Cadillac ELR. This luxury coupe featured a hybrid setup comprising a 1.4-liter inline-four gas engine and an electric motor. The setup produced a remarkable 233 horsepower and 373 lb-ft of torque. It also delivered an impressive all-electric range of 39 miles and a fuel efficiency rating of 85 MPGe.

Another notable offering by Cadillac that dominated the luxury hybrid market in the early to mid-2010s was the Escalade Hybrid, produced from 2009 to 2013. The model came with a hybrid powertrain that combined a 6.0-liter V-8 engine with a battery pack and a pair of electric motors. This hybrid setup generated a combined output of 379 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid received EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined.

Despite the success of these Cadillac hybrid models, the luxury brand transitioned away from hybrids after the release of the 2016 ELR, shifting its focus to developing fully battery-powered vehicles. This move is part of a broader goal to have a fully electric lineup by 2030. While the company has confirmed that it’ll continue to offer internal combustion engine models as long as demand persists, it’s still pushing forward with its plans for a fully electrified lineup, with several fully electric models slated for release over the next few years.

Cadillac’s Electric Offerings

Cadillac has been expanding its all-electric lineup as part of its commitment to electrification over hybridization. Here’s an overview of the current and upcoming Cadillac electric vehicles (EVs).

2025 ESCALADE IQ

The first-ever all-electric 2025 ESCALADE IQ is undoubtedly one of the most compelling models in the luxury brand’s lineup. In keeping with Cadillac’s reputation for unbridled luxury and comfort, the new Escalade IQ delivers a well-designed cabin filled with premium amenities and tech. Its standout interior features are heated and ventilated massaging seats, 126-color ambient lighting, a five-zone climate control system, and a tinted and UV-treated panoramic fixed-glass roof. This eco-friendly design is a testament to Cadillac’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The interior is full of advanced technologies to transform every drive into a one-of-a-kind luxury experience, including a 33-inch diagonal LED display, a 19-speaker AKG audio system, and a 126-color dual-zone ambient lighting system.

2025 Cadillac LYRIQ

The 2025 Cadillac LYRIQ is a versatile all-electric SUV that can handle everything from quick errands around town to long adventure drives. It has a single motor setup that cranks out 365 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque or a dual-motor system that produces 515 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. As for range, the single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant makes approximately 326 miles on a single charge, while the dual-motor can travel 319 miles.

The 2025 LYRIQ doesn’t compromise when it comes to tech either. Its 33-inch diagonal LED display is the largest in its segment, providing stunning visuals and easy access to essential navigation and entertainment apps. It also has a 19-speaker AKG sound system and 126-color ambient lighting.

Standout interior comfort and tech features include a first-of-its-kind four-zone microclimate system, five standard interactive high-definition displays, and a four-zone smart glass roof.

ghostbusters cadillac car

When moviegoers first saw the Ghostbusters racing through New York City in a heavily modified white Cadillac ambulance, few could have predicted the cultural impact that vehicle would achieve. The 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor, named Ecto-1 in the film, is one of the most recognizable vehicles in movie history.

The 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor: Cadillac’s Professional Luxury

In the post-war era of the 1950s, Cadillac emerged as a symbol of luxury and innovation in the American automobile market, known for bold designs, futuristic styling, and sophistication.

The Miller-Meteor was a coach-built vehicle based on the Cadillac Series 75 commercial chassis. It was the result of a partnership between the Miller Coach Company and the Meteor Motor Car Company, created to serve the needs of funeral homes and ambulance services. The Miller-Meteor was ideal for professional use, thanks to its long wheelbase and extended rear compartment, which accommodated specialized ambulance equipment. Compared to most business vehicles available of the time, these cars offered a level of luxury rarely seen in professional fleets.

Design That Defined an Era

The 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor is best known for its enormous tail fins —taller than those of any previous Cadillac. These dramatic, jet-inspired fins weren’t purely ornamental; they symbolized America’s fascination with space travel and speed at the peak of the Space Race. Wit its quad headlights, wide grille, wraparound windshield, and all that chrome, it embodied the bold optimism of midcentury era.

Measuring approximately 21 feet long and weighing over 7,000 pounds, the Miller-Meteor was a rolling demonstration of Cadillac’s design bravado. With its solid body construction, dependable driving characteristics, and spacious interior, it stood out and performed well. Though originally designed for somber roles such as funerals and emergency services, its iconic styling eventually led to a far less solemn task — one that defied its funeral car origins.

From Hearse to Ecto-1: A Hollywood Transformation

When director Ivan Reitman and his team developed the concept for the 1984 film “Ghostbusters,” they envisioned a unique vehicle for their team of paranormal exterminators. The script originally described the car as black with purple lights and other futuristic touches — an idea scrapped for budgetary and aesthetic reasons. Enter the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor.

Special effects artist Stephen Dane was tasked with transforming the ambulance-hearse hybrid into the Ecto-1. The modifications were extensive and eye-catching. The car was painted bright white and given flashing emergency lights, a siren, ladders, rooftop equipment, and the now-famous Ghostbusters logo on the doors. The design balanced comic-book fantasy with utilitarian realism, turning a once gloomy vehicle into an unforgettable character.

In the film, the Ecto-1 wasn’t just a means of transportation; it was a mobile headquarters. Whether screeching through Manhattan traffic or pulling up to a haunted building, the Ecto-1 added urgency, comedy, and visual flair to every scene. Its loud siren, exaggerated size, and supernatural tech made it the perfect extension of the Ghostbusters’ quirky and heroic mission.

A Pop Culture Phenomenon

Over time, the Ecto-1 has become one of the most recognizable vehicles in cinematic history, often ranked alongside the DeLorean from “Back to the Future” and the Batmobile. It appeared in “Ghostbusters II” (1989), “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (2021), and the animated series “The Real Ghostbusters,” each cementing its place in popular culture.

Fans and car enthusiasts around the world have recreated the Ecto-1, appearing at conventions, fan events, and parades. The original car has been restored multiple times and displayed at various exhibits, including the Petersen Automotive Museum and Universal Studios. In 2021, the vehicle was celebrated again when “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” brought the Ecto-1 back into the limelight for a new generation.

The Ecto-1 has inspired toys, models, LEGO kits, and even Halloween costumes. It’s more than a movie prop — it’s a cultural artifact that symbolizes nostalgia, creativity, and the fun of busting ghosts.

Cadillac and the Silver Screen

Cadillac has long held a starring role in Hollywood. During the 1950s and 1960s, the brand was synonymous with status and glamour, frequently appearing in films as the vehicle of choice for celebrities, mobsters, and presidents alike. Cadillac’s dramatic styling made it a natural fit for cinematic storytelling in thrillers, comedies, and sci-fi adventures.

The 1959 Cadillac, with its oversized fins and chrome brilliance, embodied the excess and optimism of its time. It was both a symbol of American prosperity and a canvas for artistic expression. In this context, the Ghostbusters’ use of a Cadillac-based vehicle wasn’t just practical — it was a tongue-in-cheek nod to Cadillac’s cinematic legacy and larger-than-life presence.

Preservation and Modern-Day Collectability

Today, original 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteors are extremely rare. Many were scrapped or repurposed after their service as hearses or ambulances. Those that remain, especially ones restored as Ecto-1 replicas, are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, often fetching six-figure prices at high-profile auctions.

Restoration of these automobiles is no small task. Parts for a 1959 Miller-Meteor are scarce, and the custom elements required to replicate the Ghostbusters vehicle demand creativity and craftsmanship. Nevertheless, collectors remain passionate. Entire online communities exist to share resources and photos, and build logs for Ecto-1 projects. For fans, owning or even seeing a well-maintained Miller-Meteor is like touching a piece of cinematic magic. Some Cadillac museums and car shows now include Ghostbusters-themed exhibits to highlight the vehicle’s dual legacy in automotive and entertainment history.

A Legacy That Lives On

The 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor’s journey from funeral car to film icon is a testament to automotive artistry and Hollywood storytelling. What began as a purpose-built professional vehicle became a beloved symbol of imagination, humor, and ghostbusting adventure. The car represents one of the brand’s most extravagant and influential designs for Cadillac enthusiasts. For movie fans, it’s a touchstone of 1980s cinema and childhood nostalgia.

Cadillacs require high-octane fuel to maximize engine performance and prolong their life span. You risk engine knocking and poor fuel economy if you don’t use premium gasoline. Using regular gas in your Cadillac’s high-compression engine can also lead to expensive repairs. The lower fuel quality does your vehicle more harm than good. Learn more about the difference between regular and premium gas and why using the right one matters for your Cadillac.

Cadillac Engines and Fuel Types

Cadillac is a luxury vehicle brand operating under GM. Its sedans and SUVs feature turbocharged, V-6, and V-8 engines that perform best with high-octane fuel.

Here’s a look at the engines available in the latest Cadillacs and their performance specs when fueled with premium gas:

  • The 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine can output up to 682 horsepower and 653 lb-ft of torque in the Cadillac Escalade V-Series.
  • The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine delivers up to 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque on Cadillac’s XT6, XT5, and XT4 SUVs.
  • The 3.6-liter V-6 engine available in the Cadillac XT6 and XT5 produces 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 2.7-liter dual-volute turbocharged engine can deliver up to 325 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque in the Cadillac CT4 V-Series sedans.
  • The 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine in the CT4 Blackwing outputs 472 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine generates up to 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in Cadillac CT5 and CT4 models.
  • The 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 available with CT5 sedans can produce up to 360 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 6.2-liter hand-built supercharged V-8 engine in the Cadillac CT5 Blackwing produces 668 horsepower and 652 lb-ft of torque.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?

Fuel type can significantly impact your vehicle’s performance. Gas has an octane rating that indicates its stability and resistance to premature ignition, which “knocks” the engine. Engine knocking happens when the temperature and pressure are too high inside the combustion chamber. As a result, the unburned fuel ignites, causing a knocking sound.

Regular gas has the lowest octane rating at 87, which is incompatible with Cadillac’s high-compression engines. Premium fuel has a higher octane rating between 91 and 94, which is ideal for withstanding immense pressure due to its increased stability. Using the correct gas type for your Cadillac’s engine prevents knocking and improves performance and fuel efficiency.

Cadillac Models That Require Premium Fuel

Since Cadillac is a luxury brand, most models come standard with an exceptional turbocharged or high-compression engine. These engines require premium gasoline for optimal performance and efficiency. Using low-octane fuel reduces engine performance and may cause damage over time.

Recent Cadillac models for which premium fuel is required or recommended include:

  • Escalade
  • Escalade-V
  • XT6
  • XT5
  • XT4
  • CT5
  • CT5-V
  • CT5-V Blackwing
  • CT4
  • CT4-V
  • CT4-V Blackwing

What Happens if You Use Regular Gas in a Cadillac That Requires Premium?

Regular gas in a high-compression engine can prematurely ignite because it can’t withstand immense pressure. If you use low-octane fuel for your Cadillac, you’ll experience engine knocking. Repeated knocking can damage your engine over time, reducing its horsepower and torque production. Another drawback of using regular gas in a Cadillac is reduced fuel economy.

High-quality premium gas is also better for your motor’s longevity due to its extra engine-cleaning benefits that reduce buildup. If you stick to low-quality, regular gas, it can cause premature wear on your engine. Premature wear not only translates to expensive repair but  can also reduce your Cadillac’s resale value. Optimize its performance and extend its life span by fueling up with premium gas.

Cadillac’s Fuel Recommendations

Cadillac recommends using premium gasoline for its turbocharged V-6 and V-8 engines. Check your owner’s manual for the gas type required for your specific model. Some Cadillacs may have a label near the gas cap citing the recommended fuel grade you should use. Following the manufacturer’s guidelines ensures your Cadillac’s longevity and peak performance.

Cost vs. Benefit of Using Premium Gas

Premium gasoline is pricier due to its higher octane rating and increased production costs. However, the long-term advantages of using high-octane fuel surpass the additional expense. A hallmark of owning a luxurious Cadillac is a dynamic driving experience. With the right gasoline, you’ll get a more enjoyable ride, and your engine will produce the maximum horsepower and torque needed for seamless acceleration. The improved fuel quality can also lead to lower maintenance costs.

If you’re looking for an American-made vehicle, Cadillac is a great place to start. The brand has a long history of manufacturing vehicles in the U.S. and plans to continue this tradition as it transitions to an all-electric lineup, supporting the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) production industry domestically. When shopping for a Cadillac, you’ll find a wide selection of models made right here in the U.S.

Cadillac’s Manufacturing Presence in the U.S.

Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors (GM), has been building vehicles in the U.S. for over a century and remains deeply committed to supporting the American economy. In 2022 alone, GM directly contributed $39.2 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for nearly a quarter of the total GDP generated by domestic car manufacturers. Nationwide, GM employs more than 90,000 people, operates over 150 facilities, and partners with more than 4,000 dealerships.

Arlington Assembly in Texas has been building GM vehicles for over seven decades and is currently home to the production of the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade-V. In Tennessee, the Spring Hills Manufacturing plant builds internal combustion and electric vehicles on the same assembly line. The 2,100-acre campus also includes facilities for stamping, battery assembly, and global propulsion. Remarkably, 700 acres of the Spring Hill property are used for farming, while another 100 are designated as a wildlife habitat.

Michigan has numerous facilities that contribute to Cadillac vehicles, including the following:

  • Bay City GPS: Builds Cadillac engine components
  • Brownstown Battery: Manufactures Cadillac CELESTIQ battery packs
  • Romulus Propulsion Systems: Makes V-6 engines and 10-speed transmissions for numerous Cadillac vehicles
  • Saginaw Metal Casting Operations: Builds 3.6-liter High Feature V-6 aluminum engine blocks and cylinder heads for the Cadillac XT6 and XT5

Factory ZERO in Detroit is GM’s first assembly plant dedicated entirely to electric vehicles. It’s home to the production of the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Other American-made EVs include the Cadillac VISTIQ and LYRIQ, reflecting a gradual shift toward expanding EV manufacturing within the U.S.

Cadillac Models Made in the U.S.

Cadillac has a robust lineup of vehicles produced in the U.S., with manufacturing plants located across the country.

Cadillac ESCALADE IQ — Detroit, Michigan

The first retail production of the 2025 Cadillac ESCALADE IQ was auctioned at the 2024 Scottsdale Fall Auction to benefit the Detroit Children’s Fund. Cadillac donated the vehicle, and 100% of the hammer price went to the charity. The ESCALADE IQ has continued to make news since, taking 29% of the vote in the 2025 Detroit News Readers’ Choice Awards. The 2026 ESCALADE IQ boasts the longest range of any electric SUV — 465 miles.

Cadillac Escalade — Arlington, Texas

The Cadillac Escalade and Escalade-V are both manufactured at Arlington Assembly, which as built the model since 1998. As part of the fifth generation, these gas-powered SUVs maintain the Escalade’s longstanding popularity. The standard hands-free Super Cruise driver-assistance technology won MotorTrend’s Best Tech 2025 award for its superior performance.

Cadillac CT4 and CT5 — Lansing, Michigan

The Cadillac CT4 debuted in 2019, followed by the CT5 in 2020. Both offer high-performance Blackwing trims, which have won multiple 10Best awards. Production for the 2026 CT4 and CT5 models is slated to start in June 2025 at Lansing Grand River Assembly.

Cadillac XT4 — Fairfax, Kansas

The Cadillac XT4 was produced at the Fairfax Assembly and Stamping plant through January 2025. Production was paused to retool the plant for the Chevrolet Bolt EV, with the manufacturing of the new Bolt set to begin in November 2025.

Cadillac XT5 and XT6 — Spring Hill, Tennessee

The Spring Hill Manufacturing plant has produced both the Cadillac XT5, a luxury midsize SUV, and the XT6, a luxury three-row SUV. GM recently announced plans to discontinue the XT6 after the 2025 model year to increase production of its EV models. XT5 production will continue through the end of 2026.

Cadillac LYRIQ — Spring Hill, Tennessee

Cadillac’s first EV, the LYRIQ, has been built at the Spring Hill Manufacturing plant since 2022. The 2026 LYRIQ-V, also produced in Spring Hill, elevates this EV’s performance and luxury. Its Velocity Max technology is expected to take the EV from zero to 60 in just 3.3 seconds, making it the fastest Cadillac ever.

Cadillac VISTIQ — Spring Hill, Tennessee

The Cadillac VISTIQ is partially responsible for the discontinuation of the Cadillac XT6. As XT6 production winds down, the new 2026 VISTIQ is ramping up. Dubbed a “baby Escalade,” it features a 102-kilowatt-hour battery pack and offers an estimated range of 300 miles.

Models Made Outside the U.S.

While the vast majority of Cadillac vehicles are made in the U.S., GM operates two international plants that produce select models. The Shanghai GM Jinqiao South plant in China builds several models, including the CT5 and XT4, for the Chinese market. The Ramos Arizpe Assembly plant in Coahuila, Mexico, produces the XT4 and the new OPTIQ for global distribution.

Why It Matters: American-Made Vehicles

Purchasing American-made vehicles is a meaningful way to support the U.S. economy and job market. Domestic car manufacturing also bolsters related industries such as steel, technology, and aluminum. U.S. manufacturers typically offer higher wages and better working conditions, so your purchase contributes to fair labor practices.

Cadillac’s Future in U.S. Manufacturing

Cadillac is dedicated to an electric future. While the company initially set a goal to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030, it has since adjusted that timeline to better align production with market demand. Though the portfolio will not be exclusively electric by that year, it will strongly emphasize EVs. The automaker expects 30 to 35% of its 2025 U.S. car sales to be all-electric.

Expected High-Powered Performance

The 2026 Cadillac LYRIQ-V will be the first of its kind as an all-electric model within the Cadillac V-series of vehicles, and it is expected to deliver a powerful performance. Considering the all-electric 2025 Cadillac LYRIQ has an impressive EPA-estimated range of up to 326 miles and up to 515 horsepower on dual motors, it is projected that the 2026 Cadillac LYRIQ-V will boast even more power. Also, since the 2025 Cadillac LYRIQ has regenerative breaking, specific driving modes, DC Fast Charging, and more, the 2026 Cadillac LYRIQ-V is expected to be just as extraordinary.

Stunning Design Combined with Athleticism

As presumed with Cadillac, this new SUV will exceed expectations with its dazzling looks and craftsmanship. With its lower distance from the ground than traditional LYRIQ models, spoilers at the bottom and top of the rear glass along with wider fenders, performance-oriented tires, and body-color fender flares, the 2026 Cadillac LYRIQ-V has a bit of a sporty appeal. In addition, there is a checkered V badge on the back, which helps signify the power behind this model.
